Faith Development
First Presbyterian strives to educate its members in the Word of God. Three
weekly Bible studies and numerous Sunday school classes are the primary vehicles
through which Christian faith is taught. The Christian Education department
provides resources, materials, conferences and workshops to assist teachers and
leaders in interpreting, teaching and applying the Bible as the cornerstone of
our faith. Our library/resource center is another extension of this church's
desire to encourage its members to deepen their faith journey through the study
of God's Word.
Worship and Music
Music is an integral part of our worship. Music and worship combine to lift us
beyond our own circumstances and into the peace and joy of God. The stewardship
of this church supports the many music programs offered at First Presbyterian --
Chancel Choir, youth and children's choirs and adult, youth and children's hand bell
choirs. The music ministry also enables us to enjoy special musical
programs at Christmas and other important times throughout the Christian year.
Fellowship
Friendships grow out of sharing our faith together. Groups such as Presbyterian
Women, men of the Church, Hilltoppers, Roadrunners, interchurch athletics,
Sunday night youth fellowship, and youth Bible study groups have for years
provided our members with spiritual strength and valuable friendships. The Wednesday
night dinner program is an opportunity to take time out of our busy lives to
remind us of our identity and responsibilities as Christians and to come
together as a family.
Mission
Established as a mission in 1873, First Presbyterian Church continues to reach
out to its local community and around the world. We provide assistance to local
citizens through our own Sick and Relief Fund, as well as Longview Community
Ministries, the coordinating body for Meals on Wheels, Food Box, Stewpot and
other assistance programs. Our members are faithful servants at work, the adults
through Habitat for Humanity and the youth through their summer mission trips.
First Presbyterian Church continues to support Evergreen Presbyterian
Ministries, Presbyterian Children's Home of Itasca, the Haiti Fund and various
educational ministries.
Building
Our church is recognized as one of the oldest and most beautiful buildings in
Longview. Our church building holds a tremendous amount of history and is home
to generations of many First Presbyterian church families. Though the age of our
church requires substantial maintenance, repair and modifications to accommodate
our usage and growth, its heritage and beauty continue to strengthen and unite
us -- the First Presbyterian Church family.
Presbyterian Children's Center
PCC, embracing 110 children from nursery school to kindergarten, is highly
regarded within our community. With it s solid academic emphasis in a Christian environment, our school shapes the lives of young children. It is warming to see
many of these youth, nurtured in a Christian environment, enter adulthood as
disciples within our church, the community and the world. It is with great pride
that we have this ministry and provide school scholarships for families in
financial need.
